SocBook 3rd entry 9/7/18

On Tuesday, we discussed ways to share our Articles and I have decided to go outside of my comfort zone in creating my own blog. This is going to be a challenge as I learn how it operates and I get accustomed to this new technology. Once I am done with this article I will see if I can get the hyperlink to post in our discussion board. Hopefully you are reading this on the computer right now.

I showed a 2 minute video that talked about some of the dynamics in the US during the industrial revolution. The other 10 minutes of the video are also very interesting and I recommend watching the whole thing if you have time.  We talked about core values and competencies. We talked about how to apply sociological perspectives to current issues, problems and/or institutions.  Chrystal used the US, China and Brazil as examples of changing issues.

We picked up where we left off on Structural-Functional perspective and went over the theory of structure of society by Karl Marx.

We had an image that showed how society is like a set of steps. Each each level is supporting the level above it. Skilled and unskilled labor made up the bottom step. This step in the US has been filled by immigration as vacancies become available. The next step is represented by management. The individuals in this group ensure that the production is getting done. The next step is the state or law. The next step is religion, philosophy and art. This step excludes the lower classes effectively keeping them from rising.

We then talked about the Social-Conflict perspective. This is a Macro perspective looking at the big picture. It is based on inequality and leads to conflict. This conflict can lead to change. It can be hard to understand other people's perspective. Everyone has a label and is labeling others, even if you don't realize it.

We covered the Symbolic-interaction perspective. This is a Micro perspective and is an ongoing process of social interaction in specific settings based on symbolic communication.  It is an individual perception of reality that is variable and always changing. You can look at the family dynamic as an example. What is everyone in the family's role? They all have jobs to do and this can change.
